Digital Connection and our Vulnerable Lives.
We all realize that we are spending too much time on our cell phone devices, and internet, but we need to understand what impact it has on the social aspects of our lives. Why does social media and this advanced new technology appeal to us when we are most vulernable?
In the words of Sherry Turkle, " We are building technology to give us the illusion of companionship with out the demands of friendship." This is a powerful statement to me because we feel a need to fill a void in our lives with attention seeking devices and apps like text messaging, facebook posts. What happened to face to face communication, will it go away and we do interviews over email and text in the future? The technology of today gives you that feeling that no one is listening to me, so, I will use my devices and apps to comfort me.
Our children that is growing up need that quality face to face conversation and personal interaction with other students so they can learn to form a bond or connection. Think about how you communicate over the phone, text, email or even a facebook post, now think about how you would communicate that same information in person. Quality communication is not a text message, email or facebook post, it's a face to face conversation that build strong, trusting relationships. When we communicate face-to-face we can pick up nonverbal cues that we would miss if we were just texting or emailing. Email can be easily misinterpreted.
What are exactly our relationships with communicable devices? "Technology gives us access and control but it also makes us sacrifice for mere connection"
