“What technology makes easy is not always what nurtures the human spirit.” — Sherry Turkle Professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sherry Turkle has studied the harmful effects of advancing technology on human social behavior. She speaks of devices that are causing these adverse affects and how to combat about limiting the use of machines (social robots, digital pets etc.) and technology devices (cell phones, internet etc.) People are afraid of being alone, they use texting, social media, games on cell phones to fill the void of solitude. When you post to Instagram and Facebook, It feels good to have that immediate sense of connection of attention and active listeners.
Communicable technology whether it's texting, email etc. has us changing the way we view and see ourselves. People are having problems with relating to themselves, others and their ability to experience and understand the human fundamental nature, purpose and essence. Sherry Turkle was right when she says, "People expect more from technology and less from each other," soon the human being will be useless, our next generation will not learn how to relate (mentally or physically) or communicate to one another with out the use of technology.
Question : How many times have you picked up your cell phone in desparation to see who has texted you while you were sleeping or who has liked your post on facebook?
-------> How many times do you email or text a friend a whole conversation without seeing them in person?
------> What role do we want that technology to play in our lives?
Aren't we the ones using the technology? Or is it more like technology is using us?
------> What have children born into this digital age learned about interacting verbally with other humans in a conversation, which takes place in real time?
I wanted to do a research paper on this subject because the world is being so advanced, which is no problem, but don't forget the powerful being you are as a human. I know that all of us know this information already but it's so common now that we dont pay any attention to it, that's the problem. I want to be able to reiterate this conversation and expand upon our knowledge of what these advanced technolgies are taking away from us as humans.
